| Gustav
Weiß and the ceramic universe
Five decades ago, in the autumn of 1957, Gustav Weiß was
appointed head of the ceramics department at Burg Giebichenstein school
of art in Halle, East Germany. Its governing body had obviously been guided
by the intention of still having the "Burg" run by young home-grown
artists in its traditional role of the guardian of crafts traditions.

The ceramist Daleki Babak
Ever since I was young and first aware of my
senses, I searched for a medium that would reflect my thoughts
and feelings. After experimenting with painting, wood and multimedia,
I discovered what became my passion: ceramics. I am primarily a
self-taught artist and still.
"I am a student of clay".

Ruth
Duckworth
From the outset, Ruth Duckworth used clay exclusively
as a medium for making art. In her career, she never had a phase of a
heavy, earthy, mystical craft ethic. Such an attitude is far more normal
today than when Ruth Duckworth discovered ceramics as a medium of artistic
expression.

The
ceramist Sebastian Scheid Anyone in a specific field of activity such as his – either
by birth or by choice, or by both – who like the ceramist Sebastian
Scheid is surrounded by famous names, could be expected not to become
his own man under the burden of renowned role models.

Leonardo
for Ceramists
Anyone studying Leonardo
is likely to feel the current situation in the world
of ceramics is like a rebirth, a
renaissance of the Renaissance, during which the ascent of the
craftsman to become an artist was gradually consummated, accompanied
by a striving for knowledge of nature and the idea of the inseparable
unity of science and art.

that for the annual ceramics festival "Höhr-Grenzhausen

that the Keramikmuseum Westerwald is opening the exhibition

Treffpunkt
1000 Grad
In its over one hundred-year history,
the Karlsruhe Majolika-Manufaktur has always collaborated with artists.
Initially, many of them were attracted by the prospect of using the
facilities of the factory for their own work, as it was specified in
the companies statutes. Later, it was rather the Manufaktur itself which
sought to make contact to the artists.

Ceramics in Kiel
Johannes Gebhardt was a lecturer in the ceramics department
of the Muthesiusschule in Kiel for thirty-eight years – reason enough
to devote an exhibition to him and his former students for the 100th anniversary
of the institution, which now enjoys university status.

Treasures
of the Liao
In approximately 1,000 A.D., the nomadic nation of
horsemen, the Kitan, brought northern China under its control, ending
the rule of the Tang dynasty. Their territory extended from Manchuria
to Mongolia and the region around present-day Beijing.

South Sea Ceramics
We have a largely idealised image of the South Pacific:
sunny island beaches with palm trees; densely wooded areas with birds
of paradise; lots of sunshine and a carefree lifestyle. Occasional press
reports on tribes who have preserved their traditional way of life in
remote areas strengthens the impression of a largely untouched landscape.

Japan forever!
When the Boeing took of from Charles de Gaulle airport
in Paris, heading for Nagoya, I was looking forward to a renewed encounter
with the place that had so inspired me at the four-week IWCAT workshop
in 1999 and had given my ceramic development so much impetus.

Gustav
Weiß: Part 2: Flame-proof bodies
A second kind of ceramics found during
excavations in northern Syria was used for the production of
cooking pots and was extremely resistant to thermal shock. It
is known as cooking pot ware and can be used for braziers in
which a fire can be made, on the balcony or in the garden.
